Monday= Music Time, Mediterranean Food, and Family Night

Monday morning!!! Fiona and I whipped up a batch of cookies to eat for Family Home Evening. She was so enthralled by the whole process!

Hildebrandt supervised

It's actually pretty fun doing housework with Fiona

It was Music Day in our Happy Taco School. We assembled a snowman together with song corresponding to each piece, then Fiona played with her musical instruments for the rest of the hour

Hero came home and "played" with the children (IE collapsed on the couch and let them do what they may to him--which ended up with Hildebrandt pulling and eating his hair)

He was conscious part of the time at least :)

I swear she's going to be a librarian or writer some day, all she want's to do is read books :)
We made lemon cream cookies for our Family Night dessert and watched an episode of "Peppa Pig" together
I like the variety of texture achieved by the use to different sized rainbow sprinkles...it distracts from the burnt cookie bottoms.

Some of us found it difficult to wait until it was time for dessert.

Actually it was mainly me who could not wait, Fiona just wanted to pick up the scattered sprinkles and put them on the cookie to "Fix it" , as she likes to say

And with a good day, comes a good rest...
I love how his hand is just paused in mid-air, but I think Fiona take the award for funniest sleeping pose, I wonder how she fell asleep with her beloved doll's foot squished up to her face.

Friday is Play Day

Yesterday, Fiona helped me wash dishes after breakfast. She had a good time until she spilled a copious amount of water all over her at the end.

Then during play time I snagged some cute snapshots of my little boy.

He is forever rolling over and getting his feet stuck in between the bars

Love those chubby hands :)

They almost look like twins in this picture :)

And then after the getting the babies to bed last night, Hero and I enjoyed a date night in. Bowls of decadent ice cream and a classic Cary Grant movie are our recipe for a good time :)

"Happy Homemaking!" (oh put a sock in it...)

Isn't that how some of us are apt to feel towards homemaking sometimes: cynical, pessimistic, and sarcastic. We can easily find inexhaustible resources of support online and in literature when the tasks of modern homemaking become just too overwhelming, but why is it so overwhelming?

Women for ages did the cooking, taught the children, cleaned the house, clothed the family, gardened, and kept the livestock, all without electricity--so why can't I consistently keep my house clean?

Well for one thing, we must recognize that most of those women of yesteryear died pretty young by todays standards. Though most historians say that was caused by disease, poor living conditions and the dangers of childbearing, I'm apt to say think that some of those early demises resulted from working themselves to death. This is something I try to keep in mind, I can do it all on my own, or I can have my health.

Another reason why we feel overwhelmed and always behind is that with added ease has come added expectation.

100 years ago, the average woman had far less material possessions to maintain. She didn't expect herself to be always setting the standard of fashion to her peers, she didn't have elaborate makeup, hair, or manicures. She didn't go through seven + outfits in one week. Laundry was physically strenuous activity and clothes were hard to come by. Washer machines, dryers, and store bought clothes have changed all that, and since we love to dress up we have filled up the time these conveniences would have bought us with--more work.

100 years ago meals were simple, possessions were few, and houses were small--thus cleaning wouldn't take very long in such circumstances but we don't live in such circumstances. Our homes our large, our possession many, and we feel the need to make meals fit for food network. Do you know what people would eat for lunch in 1850?-- cheese and bread, or a baked potato, simple as that.

Now I'm not saying we should have one outfit to be worn everyday of the week or that we should return to the dietary standards of the 19th century--such extremes are both freakish and unhealthy--but we should take an account of where we are expending unnecessary time and concern, then simplify our lives.

Oh, and I forgot one thing, pioneer did not have pinterest. Oh pinterest that wondrous thing that both blesses and curses us, that uplifts us and destroys us, that makes life easier and more complicated. I love pinterest, I have been immensely blessed by this website, but I also recognize that if I do not exercise some wisdom and restraint Pinterest can become my undoing by making me feel like I need to do all these things all of the time and then craft something out wood pallets.

Choose what matters and simplify life. Spending time with your children matters, dust in the corner doesn't. Having a clean, comfortable home is important, having a home ready to be photographed for Better Homes & Gardens at any given moment, doesn't. Feeding your family a healthy meal is essential, making an exact replica of Buckingham palace out of gingerbread for desert is not.

Do what you love in homemaking, there is a time and place for the elaborate but not every day.

Happy Taco School: Day 3 -Science Day

After only three days, Fiona has caught on to our little experiment. The first thing she said to me while trying to pull the trash bag out of the trash bin in her room was, "Want to go to school".

Today we did learned a little of how animals keep warm in the cold. We did the classic Crisco in ice water activity. This is all a little deep for a two year old, but I thought she would enjoy the sensory experience of it all and play with the Crisco.

She liked the water, but not the shortening on her hand. After I caked it all on her hand, she just held it there in mid-air and said, "Messy" and asking for a napkin.

Perhaps next time I'll find something more agreeable for her:)

Happy Taco School: Day 2

Wow! It's been a while since my last post, almost two months! Let's just say the past few months have been a happy whirlwind of activity: Thanksgiving, looking into grad schools, meeting Hero's mission president, Christmas, New Year's, and sending Hero off for his last undergraduate semester.

Now we can return to some sense of normalcy around here and the beginning of a new project for sweet Fiona and I. During Hildebrandt's morning nap, Fiona and I have our own little scholastic adventure, a pre-preschool hour if you will. We call it Happy Taco School (obviously)

This week's theme is Bundling up, and today we did an art project to introduce color associations.

I cut out mitten shapes from construction paper and put dollops of paint on wax paper (which makes a great disposable pallet.

We painted Fiona's hands a color and then did imprints on the mittens associated with that color. For instance, blue is used to make green and purple so we put a blue hand print on the green and purple mittens.

Fiona really enjoyed the experience and I cannot wait to hang these little mittens up!
